EDITOR, Daily News:

I consider myself a conservative Alaskan. I primarily vote Republican. I’m against gun control, and pro-union.

Now, if someone wants to be non-union, I’m not going to talk down or judge them for it, but I do know that unionism lines up perfectly with my conservative values.

Let me give you an example. My stance against gun control is based on the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. My stance on unions is based on the First Amendment. When we stand together in a union, we’re exercising our freedom of assembly. When we carry picket signs to demand a good contract, we’re exercising our freedom of speech.

Our elected leaders in Washington should consider these facts when representing us. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan should stand with Republican U.S. Rep. Don Young, who joined with Democrats and voted to pass the PRO Act a few months ago. Murkowski and Sullivan should do the same.

This isn’t about political parties. This is about the future of working families in Ketchikan, across Alaska and all across this country.
