Wayne Francis Hewson, 69, died Aug. 24, 2022, in Metlakatla.

He was born on Oct. 26, 1952 in Metlakatla. 

Mr. Hewson married his wife, Toni, on Feb. 5, 1977, in Metlakatla.

He was employed at the Tamgass Creek Hatchery, and in the meat department of Leask’s Market. He also worked with Kawanti as a carver and tour guide.

“He was a prolific master carver of nearly 50 totem poles,” his family writes. He enjoyed “making art of all sorts! Teaching loved ones the Ts’msyen art!”

Mr. Hewson also enjoyed playing music, and Native dancing. His favorite sayings included “Groovy,” “Far Out,” “Groovy Baby,” and “Not made in China.”

He was member of the William Duncan Memorial Church.

Mr. Hewson was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Wesley J. “Wado” Hewson Sr.; sister, Grace Hewson; brothers, “Jaise” Hewson, Phillip “Pepe” Hewson, Walter “Wally” Hewson and Raymond Hewson.

He is survived by his wife, Toni Hewson; sons, David Hewson and Daniel (Rondy) Hewson; brother, David A. Boxley; sister, “Dodie” Mather; brother, Robert Hewson Sr.; children, Ellen and Kenneth Milton; grandchildren, Allison, Georgia and Kenneth; aunt, Evelyn Thompson; uncle, Wilfred “Uncle Ned” Haldane Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be on Monday, Sept. 5, 2022, at the Metlakatla Presbyterian Church, officiated by the Rev. Larry Emery.
