Richard Dean Schwehm, 61, died April 14, 2021, in Metlakatla.
He was born April 6, 1960, in San Diego, California.
He attended school from the east to West Coast, and also Hawaii. In addition to California and Hawaii, he resided in Oregon, Washington, Montana and Virginia before moving to Metlakatla in 1983.
Mr. Schwehm served in the U.S. Navy from July 6, 1977 to July 13, 1983, aboard the USS Coral Sea CV43.
He was married on Dec. 31, 1989, in Ketchikan.
Mr. Schwehm worked as a longshoreman, and was employed by Annette Island Packing Co., the Louisiana-Pacific Mill and Ketchikan Pulp Co., and as a Metlakatla Indian Community laborer.
He enjoyed fishing — every kind from trolling to highlining, traditional seafood, camping, bingo, slots, biking, fireworks, woodcutting and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Schwehm was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia (Goodman) Simpson; stepfather, Cecil Simpson; father, Francis Schwehm; and brother, Randy Severson.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Schwehm; children, Charity King, Angela and Ian Blandov, Steven Schleusner Jr. and Vicky McGilton, Denise and Tyrone Hudson, and Lindsey and Franklin Hayward; sister, Stacy Ryan, brother-in-law, Ken Ryan; brother, David E. Schwehm Sr.; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2021, at the Congregational Christian Church, officiated by Pastor Craig White.
Mr. Schwehm’s remains were cremated.
