Martha Doris Burton, 80, died on Oct. 17, 2019, at her home in Ketchikan.
She was born on Aug. 19, 1939, in Arrandale, British Columbia.
She attended school in Gitwinksihlkw, British Columbia, and moved to Ketchikan with her husband in 1965.
“Martha had a special zest for life and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cooking and spending time with her friends and family,” her family writes. “Above all, she loved fishing with her husband. Martha is known by those who knew her for putting others’ needs ahead of her own and made a difference in the lives of everyone she met, her beautiful smile will be remembered.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nora and Edward Azak; husband, Herbert Burton; brothers, Jerry and Herbie Azak; and sisters, Pyllis Cheecham and Linda Moore.
She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Victor) Burton, Felicia Burton, Norene (Steve) Otnes and Norma (Kendall) Sawa; son, Dexter Barton; nephew, Aaron Burton; grandchildren, Kaemon Sawa, Elizabeth (Chase) Powers, Ryan Otnes, Casandra Otnes, Cedric Burton and Henrietta Burton; great-grandchildren, Dezmond Purvis, Sean Chilton and Alana Powers; and siblings, Sarah Wesley, Perry (Olive) Azak, Jean Squires, Karen Azak, Arnold Azak, and Sandra (Ron) Wesley.
“Martha is remembered by much extended family and friends throughout Terrace, British Columbia; Ketchikan; Metlakatla; the Nass Valley, British Columbia; Lethbridge, British Columbia; and Long Beach, Washington,” her family writes.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019, in the Salvation Army Center at 342 Stedman Street. A potluck and visitation will follow the services.
