On March 14, 2021, the world lost a wonderful poet. Marla Delene Olsen, 79, passed away peacefully in her home in Colville, WA. She was born on April 9, 1941 in Colville, WA to Delbert and Marion (Wright) Scoles.
Marla graduated from Colville High School with the class of 1959. She has over 100 bricks from the old high school that was ultimately torn down in 1952 that line her backyard to this day. Upon graduation she received a scholarship to attend a 6-week art school in Lawrence, KS and also attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA where she met Claude B. Hamilton, Jr. They were married on February 21, 1960 and had two children, Dennis and Theresa. After a short marriage to Claude, Marla met Roger D. Olsen and the two were married on September 24, 1966. Roger, Marla, Dennis and Theresa moved to Ketchikan, AK in October of 1966 where Roger was employed by the pulp mill until he retired in 1997.
From 1997 to 2006, Marla and Roger traveled the United States and Canada to lake fish during the spring/summer months and wintered in Hope, AZ. In 2006, they moved to Kettle Falls, WA to be near Marla’s mother and their daughter, Theresa. Marla took care of her family with great love, compassion and dedication. She enjoyed her adorable grandchildren, Karlee and Eric and Theresa’s pups, Misty, Daisy and Blazer. She loved beachcombing, fishing, camping, riding four-wheelers, decorating cakes for friends and family, playing the organ, painting, potluck dinners, card games, puzzles, gardening, going to the casino, bowling, playing darts and helping with local auctions. Marla always had a poem to construct for anyone who came into her life. She says that “she was born with a poem in her heart”. Rhyming was her gift, which was handed down for many generations. Marla made sure to attend all of her class reunions where she was sure to present a poem to the class.
Marla was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Roger D. Olsen; her parents, Delbert and Marion Scoles; and nephew, Ronald “Rob” Bible. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Rupert; son, Dennis (Korry) Olsen; grandchildren, Karlee (Joe) Miller, Eric (Selena) Olsen; great-grandchildren, Tessa and Chase Miller; sister, Deena Lowry; nephew, Darin (Donna) Bible; niece Ronde Snell; brother-in-law, Lloyd (Dawn) Olsen; and many more extended family.
Our family is extremely grateful to Hospice of Spokane and Bellevue Healthcare of Spokane for their help with the care and comfort during her final days at home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Spokane or Chewelah Veterinary Clinic.
At Marla’s request, no service will be held. An interment at Mountain View Park Cemetery is being planned at a later date with family. Please visit the online memorial and sign the guestbook at www.danekasfuneralchapel.com. Danekas Funeral Chapel & Crematory has been entrusted with the arrangements.
