Genon Berniece Nelson, 52, died Aug. 25, 2019, in Metlakatla.
She was born Genon Berniece Dundas on Feb. 12, 1967, in Huntington Park (Los Angeles), California.
She graduated from Metlakatla High School in 1985, and from Portland University in 1991.
She was married on Sept. 14, 1991, in Metlakatla.
Mrs. Nelson was employed as a receptionist in Metlakatla; in quality control with the Annette Island Packing Company; as a librarian with the Metlakatla Indian Community; in travel security at SeaTac Airport; and with Crossroads Ministry at World Expo 1986.
She was a member of the Church of God. She was a member of the Alaska State Honor Choir.
Mrs. Nelson enjoyed photography and graphics, and was a pianist and vocalist.
“She had an abundance of love, and a strong spirit,” her family writes. “She was a great supporter of both people and causes.”
Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her grandson, Morgan William Paavo.
She is survived by her husband, Sam Nelson Sr. of Metlakatla; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Maralejo of Riverside, California; parents, George and Lena Dundas of Ketchikan; sons, Isaac Nelson, Sam Nelson Jr. and Charles Nelson, all of Metlakatla; daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Mike Paavo and thier family of Metlakatla; and daughter, Amber Williams and her children of Metlakatla.
A family and friends viewing will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 2019, at the Ketchikan Mortuary.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept, 2, 2019, at the Presbyterian Church in Metlakatla, officiated by the Rev. Mike Lake. The Rev. Jeff White and the Rev. Bill White will be speaking at the services.
Mrs. Nelson’s remains will be intered at Oceanview Cemetery.
