Frances Esther Borowick Rhodes, 78, died on April 22, 2021, in Bellingham, Washington.

She was born on Jan. 3, 1943, in Oregon City, Oregon, to Esther and Garfield Borowick. She was raised in Oregon City and, upon graduation from Oregon City High School, she served as a secretary for the Oregon State Highway Department for 10 years.

She met James (Jim) Rhodes through mutual friends while Mr. Rhodes was attending college. The couple were married in June 1971. They lived at Randle, Washington, then Yacolt, Washington, as Mr. Rhodes worked as a civil engineer with the U.S. Forest Service. They had a son,  James (Jim) G. Rhodes, and daughter, Esther P. Rhodes.

In 1975, the family moved to Ketchikan, as Mr. Rhodes transferred to the Tongass National Forest, Ketchikan Area Office.

“(She) enjoyed living in Ketchikan as it did not get really cold nor too hot,” her family writes. “Frances enjoyed attending musical, art, and other community performances.  She always attended the “Fish Pirate’s Daughter” performances, just to see who was acting what character and how well they did.”

Mrs. Rhodes stayed at home while her children were small, and she babysat other children who were the same ages as her own.  After her children started school, she started working part time as a clerk for a local doctor. She served as a receptionist and clerk for the Wilson Clinic and later for PeaceHealth Ketchikan General Hospital for numerous years.

“She especially enjoyed serving the clients and later served those in need of Medicare travel and accommodations for out-of-town services,” her family writes.

Mrs. Rhodes was active in initiating the youth soccer program, and, for several years, did much of the secretarial work supporting the program.

She enjoyed bowling and ice skating, and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi doing various activities that raised funds for community needs. She enjoyed visits by her grandchildren and going to their various activities until she was unable to attend their functions.

She and Mr. Rhodes retired in 2009.

Mrs. Rhodes was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Jim, of Ketchikan; son, James G. (Melissa) Rhodes of Snoqualmie, Washington; daughter, Esther P. (Dave) Rhodes-Bray of Ketchikan; grandchildren, Shaundra Rhodes (Trevin Travares) and Iris Bray, both of Ketchikan, and Benjamin Rhodes of Snoqualmie; sister, Florence (Edward) Jones of Vancouver, Washington: nieces, Theresa (Khalil) Briethaupt, and Tawnya (Mark) Pongratz-Bartha; and nephews, Robert (Kelly) Jones, and Brian (Sarah) Rhodes, all of Vancouver.

Donations may be made to the Ketchikan Youth Soccer League, P.O. Box 5271, Ketchikan, 99901; or First City Players, 335 Main St., Ketchikan.

A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date.
