Ellen Jane Cowan, 87, died on May 18, 2021, at the Ketchikan Pioneer Home.
She was born Ellen Jane Yeisley on Sept. 30, 1933, in Ketchikan.
She attended Wacker City School and Ketchikan High School.
Cowan grew up at the Yeisley family homestead at mile 8.5 of North Tongass Highway.
Cowan was married on Aug. 19, 1950, at U.S. Court House in Ketchikan.
She was a housewife and homemaker, and also worked at Ketchikan Steam Laundry and the Ward Cove Cannery.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, berry picking, fishing, hunting and making homemade root beer.
"She helped her mom take care of her younger siblings and other kids that lived on the north end of town," her family writes. "She loved family gatherings, having tea parties with her grandkids. Also showing them how to smoke and put up jars of fish. She also liked reading maps. She was helpful at the Pioneer Home reading to the preschoolers and helped with the elders."
Mrs. Cowan was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Cowan; infant son Gerald L. Cowan; sister, Verna Vincent; brother, James Yeisley; and parents, Claude and Delia Yeisley.
She is survived by her brother, David Yeisley of Ketchikan; sons, Raymond (Terrie) and Robert (Georgia) of Ketchikan; grandchildren, Andrew and Colleen of Ketchikan, Michael of Tigard, Oregon, and Melissa DeLeon of Juneau; great-grandchildren, Kassidy Weston of Ketchikan, Carson and Hunter Cowan of Ketchikan, Isiah and Gabriel Garcia, and Ciara DeLeon of Juneau and Aidan and Chloe Cowan of Tigard.
Mrs. Cowan's remains will be cremated and her ashes will be taken to the family homestead and icehouse, along with those of her husband, Harold Cowan.
