Cherry Lee Nelson, 61, died March 1, 2022, in Metlakatla.
She was born on Dec. 25, 1960, in Palo Alto, California, and graduated from Metlakatla High School in 1979.
She was employed by the Annette Island Service Unit for 15 years.
She was a member of the Metlakatla Presbyterian Church.
She was a basketball and Little League coach and volunteer, and was a volunteer for many community events.
“She would volunteer and/or donate to any and all fundraisers and the community kitchen for funerals,” her family writes. “Helping the community was her passion.”
She also enjoyed crotcheting, sewing, beading and creating by weaving.
“From dyeing Easter eggs and joining Halloween costume contests to baking up a storm for Christmas, she loved anything involving her grandbabies,” her family writes.
Cherry Lee Nelson was preceeded in death by her sisters, Mercy Schleusner; brothers, Franklin (Bunky) Nelson and John Nelson; and nephew, Charles O. Nelson II.
She is survived by her parents, Deanna and Gilbert Nelson; children, Desiree Boyd, Steven Nelson, Anthony Nelson, Ryan Nelson and Taylor Nelson; and grandchildren, Tenisha Nelson, Alysia Nelson-Boyd, Rikki Nelson-Boyd, Dylan Nelson and DeMarcus Nelson.
The date and time of a service at Metlakatla Presbyterian Church is to be determined.
