The Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic is still scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Ketchikan High School, but travel complications have prompted some reorganization of the overall brackets and Tuesday’s scheduled matchups.

“This is the most unique tournament (in) trying to figure out how to make it work with all of the curve balls life likes to throw at travel, traveling events,” Kayhi Kings coach Eric Stockhausen said early Monday evening.

Although most of the teams from around Alaska and one from Oregon that were scheduled for the tournament had arrived in Ketchikan as of Monday, flight issues affected a boys team from Unalakleet, which is in the Norton Sound area of Western Alaska, and the boys and girls teams from Hutchison High School in Fairbanks.

Meanwhile, South Anchorage High School’s boys team was intending to travel to Arizona, but had gotten stuck at an airport for a number of hours Sunday, according to Stockhausen. Uncertain about Unalakleet’s circumstances, an invitation was extended for South to play in the Clarke Cochrane tournament, which was accepted.

As of Monday evening, the Unalakleet and South teams are set to arrive on Tuesday, while Hutchison’s teams on Wednesday morning, according to Stockhausen.

“Let's just say everybody's travel is a mess and we had to do some serious fancy footwork and a lot of people agreeing to changes and stuff for this to work,” he said.

Part of the changes are for the Kayhi and Petersburg boys’ teams to both play twice on Tuesday — with Petersburg slotted against two reportedly very strong teams in Wilsonville High School (Oregon) and South.

The Hydaburg High School boys team, now coached by former Kayhi standout Damon Holter, made some adjustments, as well, and now is scheduled to play two of its three games early on Tuesday (9 a.m.) and Wednesday (7:30 a.m.)

“We have tried to serve every team the best we can, and give them competitive games and still give them a great experience,” said Stockhausen.
