Craig defeats Haines
KETCHIKAN (KDN) — Right out of the gate, the Craig High School Lady Panthers jumped on top of the Haines High School Lady Glacier Bears, 14-6, on Wednesday. The two teams jump-started the Region V 2A tournament at Juneau-Douglas High School. And everybody on the Lady Panthers’ roster came ready to play.
A trio of Lady Panthers hit double figures, as Craig cruised to a 60-25 victory over Haines.
Craig’s Syvannah Bird recorded a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Both Alissa Durgan and Shaylee Johnson had 10 points apiece.
The victory bumps the No. 4 Lady Panthers to the Region V semifinal against the top-seeded Metlakatla High School Miss Chiefs at 8 a.m. on Thursday. It will be the fifth meeting between Craig and Metlakatla this season.
Wednesday was the fifth meeting between the Lady Panthers and Lady Glacier Bears, as well. And it was the second time Craig had hit the 60-point plateau against Haines.
After knocking in 14 points against Haines, the Lady Panthers scored another 14 in the second frame, and carried a 28-13 lead at the half.
The Lady Glacier Bears’ Natalie Jobbins scored 11 of those. They were the only tallies Haines’ sharpshooter knocked down in the game. But she was red hot before the break, as she hit three threes before the intermission. They were the Lady Glacier Bears’ only three-pointers of the game.
Haines’ Sadie Anderson picked up where Jobbins left off, as Anderson scored all 10 of her points in the second half. But beyond Jobbins and Anderson, the Lady Glacier Bears struggled to find the basket.
Meanwhile, all nine of the Lady Panthers did just that, as each player on the roster scored.
In addition to Bird, Durgan and Johnson, Craig’s Alexis Lawnicki and Sara Burnham combined for 15 points. Lawnicki knocked in eight points, and Burnham scored seven.
Metlakatla won three of the four meetings against Craig this season. The point spread between the Miss Chiefs and Lady Panthers was an average of 8.8 points per game.
But the 8 a.m. tipoff time on Thursday might play a role, as the two teams to look to get a hot hand early.
