KETCHIKAN (KDN) — The Ketchikan Gymnastics Club lept down to the Lower 48 earlier this year for the 22nd Annual Rose City Challenge in Beaverton, Oregon.

Nearly 1,000 gymnasts of various age levels packed the Hoop YMCA, just a few miles outside of downtown Portland. Thirty teams from across the Pacific Northwest participated in both girls’ and boys’ competitions from Feb. 28 to March 1.

Most of those competitors were girls, as 771 were named. Ketchikan sent 16, as the KGC’s Lilli Larna, Kellyn Briggs, Kari Klinger, Casidee Zartman, Janessa Caguiat, Shyla Abajian, Madeline Munhoven, Juliet Cockrum, Kylee Reese, Kendall Elliot, Trinity Nielsen, Summer Boling, Piper Caskey, Fawn Breese, Gaby Castillo and Zoe Jackson represented the First City.

Ketchikan was the only squad from Alaska participating, and the 16 hometown gymnasts held their own against other competitors in all four events — vault, bars, beam and floor.

Larna, Briggs, Zartman, Abajian, Caguiat, Munhoven, Cockrum, Elliot, Boling and Breese all placed on the podium in various events in their respective age brackets. And both Larna and Breese placed first in events.

Larna scored 8.925 in her Xcel Platinum Level vault routine, tying a gymnast from Mid Columbia Gymnastics Academy in Washington, for the top spot. They beat another gymnast from Washington by 0.025.

Breese hit the top score in both her bars and floor routine, during the Xcel Silver Level competition.

She scored 9.650 in bars and 9.400 in floor. The second-place scores in each event were behind Breese by 0.250 and 0.050, respectively.

Most brackets regularly listed between 12 and 20 gymnasts, and only the top seven received recognition.
