Just as they had done the day before, the Ketchikan High School Lady Kings jumped out to an early double-digit lead against their opponent on Thursday.
Not even 24 hours after beating West Valley High School 53-30, the Lady Kings kick started Thursday’s matinee against the Valdez High School Buccaneers with a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Valdez did get a basket to roll through the hoop in the final seconds of the first frame. But the double-digit deficit was too much for Valdez to overcome, and Kayhi rolled to a 62-29 win over the Buccaneers during the 10th Annual Joe T. Classic Basketball Tournament at Lathrop High School.
The Lady Kings’ Bree Johnson and Lindsay Byron drained a pair of threes in the opening frame, helping Kayhi lead 14-2 after the first eight minutes, and the Lady Kings’ offense was off and running.
Both Johnson and Byron finished the game in double figures, scoring 10 and 15 points, respectively. Kayhi’s Jenae Rhoads led the Lady Kings with 16 points. Shaelyn Mendoza tallied 13 in the game, giving Kayhi four double-digit scorers.
The Buccaneers’ Kylie Gilbert scored Valdez’s lone basket in the first quarter. She led all scorers with 19 points, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the Buccaneers’ tallies.
Kayhi led 31-10 at the half. Johnson hit her second three of the game in the second quarter, and Mendoza nailed a shot from beyond the arc, giving Kayhi four threes in the first half. Byron drained two more 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, finishing the day with three threes. Nine of her 15 points came from behind the arc.
It was the second straight game Kayhi finished with six 3-pointers, as the Lady Kings knocked down six threes in Wednesday’s win, as well.
Valdez opened the second half outscoring Kayhi 8-4. The Buccaneers took a bite out of their deficit, 35-18, but a three-point play by Kayhi’s Hya Bondoc midway through the third quarter put the Lady Kings back on top by 20, 38-18, and the Lady Kings continued to roll along.
Valdez did outscore Kayhi 14-11 in the third quarter, as Gilbert knocked in 10 of her 19 points in the frame. But the Lady Kings bounced back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Buccaneers 20-5 in the final frame.
Byron made her two 3-pointers, and knocked down a bucket, tallying eight points in the final eight minutes. Mendoza, Rhoads and Kayhi’s Gabby Mas also scored in the last quarter. Mendoza and Rhoads hit baskets in each frame of the game.
Kayhi and Dimond High School will go head-to-head on Friday afternoon. The matchup is slated to start at 3 p.m., and will be livestreamed on Lathrop High School’s activities page on Facebook, according to Ketchikan High School.
The fire alarm at Lathrop High School sounded during the second quarter on Thursday, causing a brief break in the basketball action. Both Valdez and Kayhi exited the gymnasium, and returned to the court shortly after school administrators gave the OK. There was no fire at Lathrop.
Both Valdez and Kayhi were given a couple minutes to warm-up before the second quarter picked back up where it left off.
