Warriors claim Region V 1A second-seed

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — With the season on the line, and a trip to the ASAA 1A state tournament in Anchorage later this month, the Region V 1A second-place matchup between the Klawock Chieftains and Hydaburg Warriors on Saturday was bound to be a battle.

And it was — for half the game.

The two teams traded offensive outbursts in the first two quarters at Clarke Cochrane Gymnasium. The Warriors jumped on top within the first eight minutes, 15-6. But allowing the opportunity to pass them by, the Chieftains regained their composure, inching ahead before the half, 22-21.

But the Chieftains’ momentum stopped there. Because after the break, it was all Klawock could do to just get a successful possession across midcourt, as time after time, the Chieftains would turn the ball over. And Hydaburg rolled to a 44-30 victory.

The win bumps Hydaburg to the state tournament at the Alaska Airlines Center from March 18 to 21, as the Region V second-place winners. The Warriors will join the Thorne Bay Wolverines, who won the regional championship on Friday.

Hydaburg junior Cadence Peele led all scorers with 16 points.

He hit seven shots inside the arc, and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. As a team, the Warriors hit 7-of-9 freebies.

Klawock junior Nevan Yockey led the Chieftains with 13 points. He scored all of his in the first half.

The Chieftains’ Kevin Isaacs was Klawock’s only consistent scorer, hitting shots in all four frames. He finished the game with 10 points, including a 3-pointer in the second quarter that helped Klawock take a halftime lead.

The Chieftains could only muster four points in the third quarter, and another four points in the fourth, as the Warriors turned Klawock’s turnovers into tallies on the board.

The Warriors scored 23 in the second half. Peele scored 10 of his 16 in the final two frames.

Scoring Line

Hydaburg: Cadence Peele 16; Willis Washington 9; Herbert Nix 9; Adrian Diaz 5; Trever Olsen 5.

Klawock: Nevan Yockey 13; Kevin Isaacs 10; Ruben Hoppe 5; Gonzalo Sanchez 2.

Chieftains beat Angoon, win girls’ 2nd seed

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — Right out of the gate on Saturday, the Klawock Chieftains and Angoon Lady Eagles played like their seasons were on the line.

And with a shot at the state tournament, there was no mistaking that both teams wanted it.

Angoon’s only hiccup came in the second quarter, when the Lady Eagles posted just four points.

That allowed the Chieftains to break away, and never look back, as Klawock won 68-44 at Kayhi.

Klawock will join the Kake Lady Thunderbirds, who won the Region V 1A title on Friday. The two teams will represent Southeast at the ASAA 1A state tournament at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage from March 18 to 21.

Angoon jumped out to an early lead. Klawock had to play catchup, and the game was knotted at 16 apiece after one quarter.

But the frame before the half was when the Chieftains pulled away.

Angoon’s four points came in the final minute of the second quarter, and the Chieftains carried a 30-20 lead at the break.

From there, the Lady Eagles held their own against the region’s top seed, scoring 24 in the second half. But the deficit was too much to overcome.

Angoon junior Samara Kookesh finished the game with 23 points. Scoring in every quarter, Kookesh hit a pair of threes and was 3-for-4 from the line.

Angoon freshman Cheyenne Kookesh also hit double figures, knocking in 11 points. She also hit a pair of threes.

But the duo was outdone by Klawock’s scoring trio of Kenai Holien, Taya Marvin and Malory Smith-Turpin.

All three knocked in double digits. Holien and Marvin both crossed the 20-point plateau, scoring 22 and 21, respectively.

Smith-Turpin tallied 18 points.

All three scored in all four quarters, lifting the Chieftains to a state tournament berth.

Scoring Line

Klawock: Kenai Holien 22; Taya Marvin 21; Malory Smith-Turpin 18; McKinley Holien 4; Isabella Hoppe 2; Keeli Vaughn 1.

Angoon: Samara Kookesh 23; Cheyenne Kookesh 11; Briana Johnson 3; Starr George 3; Taryn Kookesh 2; Zara Fayer 2.
