A full slate of matches is scheduled for the Ketchikan High School Kings and Lady Kings wrestling squads at the Lancer Smith Memorial Invitational this weekend in Anchorage.

Kayhi traveled to the big city, and helped kick off the largest wrestling meet in the state on Friday. Schools from all across Alaska travel to Anchorage for the three-day event.

Whereas, the state meet is divvied up into school classifications — 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A — for scheduling purposes, the Lancer Smith Memorial is an all-hands-on-deck type experience, with more than 60 high schools in attendance at one time.

The meet is divided into three tournaments — boys’ varsity, boys’ junior varsity and girls’ brackets. In addition to Kayhi, other Southeast Alaska squads participating include Craig, Petersburg, Mt. Edgecumbe, Sitka, Thunder Mountain and Wrangell high schools.

Other teams on hand include Barrow, Bartlett, Chugiak, Colony, Delta, Dimond, Eagle River, Eielson, East Anchorage, Homer, Houston, Kodiak, Lathrop, Nome, Nikiski, North Pole, Palmer, Seward, Scammon Bay, South Anchorage, Unalakeet, Valdez, Wasilla, West Anchorage and West Valley high schools — just to name a few.
