Ada Odden

Ketchikan High School’s Ada Odden competes in the preliminaries for a hurdles event during the Region V meet at Thunder Mountain High School on Friday. Odden advanced to the finals in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, which were ran on Saturday. Odden won the 300-meter hurdles event, setting both a personal record and school record, finishing in 48.30 seconds. The Ketchikan High School track and field team competed at the Region V meet at Thunder Mountain High School this weekend. While both the Juneau-Douglas High School boys’ and girls’ squads won the meets, scoring 90 and 80 points, respectively, Kayhi’s boys’ and girls’ squads finished second overall, tallying 38 and 49 points, respectively.

Between the 23 athletes that Kayhi sent to the Region V meet, the squad set 26 personal records, as well as a pair of school records, and had several first-place victories.

Both school records were set on the girls’ side.

Kayhi junior Ada Odden set a new school record in the 300-meter hurdles race, finishing in 48.30 seconds. The mark also was a personal best.

Odden made school history again, as she teamed up with Rachel Knight, Rachelle Biggs and Linnea Loretan in the girls’ 4x200 relay. The foursome finished first, in 1:55.86, breaking the previous school record of 1:57.00, which was set during the Ketchikan Invitational on April 24.

According to Kayhi head coach Alex Pennino, Knight also turned heads during her dashes in the 400-meter and 200-meter races. The Kayhi senior set personal bests in both, and won first place in each competition.

She finished in 27.06 seconds in the 200-meter race, and 1:00.57 in the 400-meter dash.

The fast times helped Knight receive the Athlete of the Meet award. She also earned a spot in the Brian Young Invitational in Kodiak later this year. Six Region V athletes received an invite.

Both Biggs and Kayhi’s Jenae Rhoads took the top two spots in shot put. Rhoads’ throw landed 28’2”, for a first-place finish, and Biggs’ toss was 27’1-3/4”. Rhoads also won discus, with a mark of 89’4”.

On the boys’ side, Kayhi’s Riley Deal won the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 18.37 seconds. The mark also was a personal best for Deal.

Deal also set a personal record in the 300-meter hurdles, placing second in 45.26 seconds — just 1.26 seconds off the leader, Elijah Mead from Thunder Mountain, who ran it in 44 seconds, flat.

Deal won the long jump, with a mark of 18’3”, also a personal best, and Kayhi’s Jared Rhoads won the high jump, hitting 5’4”.

Kayhi’s Josh Rhoads placed second in both the shot put and discus, with marks of 37’8-3/4” and 109’10”, respectively.

Limited practices but big-time results

Kayhi could only practice six times this month, due to the community’s risk level for the novel coronavirus.

But even with limited opportunities on the track, Kayhi’s performance at the Region V meet received praise from Pennino.

“Kids who had 15 minutes to work on handoffs before the meet, and a handful of practices to try to master individual events, showed up and competed on the biggest stage in Southeast,” he said in an email.
