JUNEAU (KDN) — It took eight minutes for the Metlakatla High School Chiefs to get the ball rolling against the Wrangell High School Wolves during the Region V 2A consolation semifinal on Friday.
But after falling behind 12-7, the Chiefs began to rally back.
Metlakatla’s Coleton Hayward, Elijah Caspersen and Cameron Gaube all drained 3-pointers in the second quarter, and the Chiefs jumped ahead 18-15 by halftime. Metlakatla eventually won 46-40.
Caspersen and Metlakatla junior teammate Isaac Henderson picked up the pace after the break. They both knocked in eight in the final two quarters.
Hayward led the way with 14 points for Chiefs. But Caspersen and Henderson were right behind him, with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Chiefs hit seven threes in the game. Caspersen and Hayward knocked down a trio of 3-pointers apiece, and Gaube also sunk a shot from behind the arc.
Wrangell’s Trevor Miller hit five threes all by himself. Brett Abrahamson knocked in the Wolves’ only other 3-pointer, as the Wolves finished six long balls.
Miller finished the game with 25 of the Wolves’ 40 points. Abrahamson scored five in the contest. With the loss, the Wrangell Wolves’ season came to an end.
The Chiefs continue on, and will play in the regional second-place game at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday.
