KETCHIKAN — Emily Bolling continued her dominance of Region V diving, the Dash brothers lived up to their surname and Easton Yoder added an unexpected state qualifying time to lead the Ketchikan High School Swimming and Diving team at the Region V championships in Juneau on Saturday.
Behind their trio of state qualifiers, the Kayhi boys led throughout most of the meet before Juneau-Douglas surged to the team title with a victory in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.
"We were in the lead going into the the relay. We were definitely hoping to win the meet, but I am really excited that we were that close against a much more experienced team," Kayhi coach Gary Crowe said of his youthful Kings' squad.
Juneau won the boys meet with 122 points. The victory in the final relay vaulted them from five points behind Kayhi to a narrow 3-point victory. The Kings were second with 119 points, followed by Thunder Mountain (110), Sitka (75), Petersburg (37), Craig (36) and Wrangell (32).
Thunder Mountain left the other teams in its wake in the girls competition, winning with 160 points. Juneau-Douglas finished second with 140 points, followed by Sitka (72), Ketchikan (63), Craig (50), Haines (10) and Petersburg (4).
Junior Trevor Dash and his brother, freshman Evan Dash, each qualified for state in a pair of events to pace the Kings.
Trevor won the 100-yard breaststroke by more than three seconds and put up a qualifying third-place time in a very fast 100-yard butterfly final. Evan won the 50-yard freestyle and his second-place time in the 100 free was also swift enough to earn a state berth.
The time in the 100 fly was a personal record for Trevor, but it was his breaststroke time that was truly noteworthy. After winning the preliminary race on Friday in 1 minute, 3 seconds, Trevor set a new Ketchikan High School record on Saturday, finishing in 59.93 seconds.
"He really wanted to break that minute," Crowe said. "He broke the Kayhi record. It was a really old record that had stood for a long time."
In the 100 fly, Trevor's third-place time of 53.38 seconds was swift enough to qualify for state. Thunder Mountain's PJ Foy won in 49.95 seconds, followed by Juneau's Chaz VanSlyke in 52.77 seconds.
During the week leading up to the regional meet, Evan Dash suffered from a bout with the flu, but it didn't slow him down over the weekend.
"He was out sick for two days," Crowe said. "But he came in and qualified second on Friday and had a great race Saturday. He is a guy that just loves to race."
In the 50 free finals, Evan got off to a quick start, led at the turn, then out-touched Juneau-Douglas senior Aaron Mulgrew-Truitt at the wall in a dramatic finish. Evan won in a time of 23.35 seconds with Mulgrew-Truitt close behind in 23.43 seconds.
"He dove in and took three strokes and after those three strokes (assistant coach) Matt Hagan had his arms in the air saying, 'He won, he won.' He led at the turn, but the guy from Juneau was starting to catch him. He kicked it right at the end and got in the finishing touch just ahead of him.
"He just turned 15 so he's been having to get used to swimming against older swimmers, but he loves the competition."
The brothers competed in every event they could during the regular season, but Crowe placed them in separate events for regions, hoping for a chance to earn more team points and potentially earn a title for the Kings. The ploy nearly worked.
"We moved them around a bit," Crowe said. "They are both good in a lot of the same events, but I wanted to spread them out a little. Juneau won the two relays and that was enough for them (to win), but it was really close."
Most of the swimmers tapered their workouts leading up to the region meet in an effort to post their best times there, but with Trevor and Evan Crowe took the risk of putting off their tapering for a week with an eye on them swimming their best at the state meet.
"Both of them weren't rested (going into regions)," Crowe said. "Next week they will be rested and looking to get a good swim."
Yoder will be joining his teammates at state as his third place-time in the 100 backstroke of 1:04.27, a personal best, proved to be enough to qualify.
"I was just looking for him to score points for the team, I wasn't expecting him to make state," Crowe said. "But he shaved three or four seconds off his best and earned a spot."
While they settled for fourth in the overall standings, the Kayhi girls asserted themselves in the diving portion of the meet, claiming three of the top four spots, including Bolling's championship total of 268.55 points.
"She was a little nervous," Crowe said. "She was trying some new dives and was a little bit nervous about them, but the nerves went away and she was diving like she normally does."
Now a senior, Bolling has been the diver to beat in the Southeast throughout her high school career.
"She has been the top diver this year, and for the last three years," Crowe said. "It will be a little tougher in Anchorage. The judges are different and everybody has different things that they are looking for. She is doing some really difficult dives."
Bolling tallied 121.8 points through the first five dives on Friday, then added another 147.75 points with her six dives on Saturday. Kayhi sophomore Kellyn Briggs was in second place after Friday's competition, but her attempt for a return bid to state was thwarted by Thunder Mountain freshman Taylor Mesdag, who used a strong session on Saturday to place second overall with 250.95 points. Briggs was third with a total of 241.6 and Kayhi senior Maretta Raber placed fourth with a total of 215.7.
Craig had three swimmers qualify for state, each making it in a pair of events. Sophomore Ada Creighton and junior Manami Lehman will represent the Craig girls, and sophomore Grant Maygren made state for the Craig boys.
Top three finishes from area swimmers included: The Kayhi boys 200 medley relay team of Gavin Harold, Trevor and Evan Dash, and Larry Kuharich placing second; Kayhi sophomore Ty Wood placing third in the 200 free; Craig sophomore Ada Creighton placing third in the girls 200 individual medley and second in the 100 fly; Kuharich, a senior, finishing fourth in the 50 free and third in the 500 free. The Kayhi boys 200 free relay team of Andrew Hildebrandt, JP Robbins, Harold and Ty Woods finishing third; and Craig sophomore Grant Maygren finishing second in the 100 backstroke.
