The City of Ketchikan and the Ketchikan Gateway Borough both will implement an additional sales tax holiday in 2023 on March 25, after the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly on Monday night voted to establish its own version of such a holiday. The Assembly also confirmed Borough Mayor Rodney Dial's appointments, including his appointment of Assembly Member Glen Thompson as vice mayor.

The vote on the sales tax holiday was 5-1, with Thompson dissenting. He said he opposed the institution of any sales tax holiday; by establishing another holiday, he said, "I think you're doubling down on dumb."
