Following the final heat of the Ketchikan Invitational swim and dive meet at the Gateway Aquatic Center on Saturday, Ketchikan High School assistant coach Rocky Elerding picked up the microphone.

The day wasn’t over, quite yet.

Elerding, an accomplished swimmer in his own right, announced that there would be a coach’s race to cap off the two-day event.

So Elerding, along with Ketchikan assistant coach Matt Hagan, Petersburg High School coach Ginger Evens, and Thunder Mountain High School coach Kenny Fox, put on their swim gear. And the foursome competed as a relay team against athletes from Kayhi, Petersburg, Thunder Mountain, Juneau-Douglas, Sitka, Wrangell and Craig high schools in a 200-yard individual medley relay.

The group placed third.

“It makes it fun watching the coaches do it,” Ketchikan head caoch Gary Crowe said. “(Kids) were saying to me, ‘Man, I didn’t know Matt was that fast.’

“It gets (the kids) motivated too,” he continued. “And that’s the most important thing, is keeping the enthusiasm going.”

Although, Kayhi’s swim and dive team didn’t need much help in that category over the weekend, as both Ketchikan’s boys’ and girls’ squads impressed their coaching staff with their competitiveness.

The team placed second, overall, combining for 431 points between Friday and Saturday’s competitions.

Thunder Mountain won the meet with 524 total combined points.

“Matt and Rocky and I are just thrilled with how they’re doing,” Crowe said.

And two days of solid swimming was a focal point for Ketchikan entering its home meet.

“Going into the meet, we had the goal of two good days back-to-back, and we did that,” Crowe said. “It was great to watch. And we wanted the kids to keep their enthusiasm going for two days, and they did that. They were out cheering all the time. It was a good meet.”

After combining for the 231 points on Friday, Ketchikan’s boys’ and girls’ squads continued to carry their momentum into Saturday, scoring 208 points.

Ketchikan had 13 individual top-five finishes, including Laura Sherrill’s first-place win in the 200-yard IM and Kyan Klinger’s second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.

Bryce Mattson had a pair of third-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. And Sherrill placed third in the 100-yard backstroke.

Ketchikan had four fourth-place finishes on Saturday. Emma Campbell placed fourth in the 200-yard IM. John Bullock did the same in the 200-yard freestyle.

Jacob Gonzalez and Tyler Merle placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.

Gonzalez also placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle. Alec Lundburg finished in fifth place in the 100-yard butterfly event.

And Emma Campbell and Josh Ryan finished fifth in their respective 500-yard freestyle races.

“We saw some really nice swims,” Crowe said of Saturday and Friday’s competitions. “John Bullock swam out of his mind today and yesterday. And the girls were nice and steady.”

Just like the individual swims, Ketchikan’s relay teams finished strong.

“The boys 400 free relay and 200 free relay, and 200 medley relay, moved up in the state rankings,” Crowe said.

Ketchikan’s Caity Pearson continued her streak of first-place finishes in the diving competitions on Friday and Saturday.

Pearson also was at the top of the list during diving competitions in Sitka and Juneau earlier this season.

Jenna Smith, Paris Knuteson and Emily Bolling also finished strong in the diving event on both days.

Only Juneau-Douglas’ Gabby Brown kept it from being a clean Kayhi sweep off the diving board.

Ketchikan has one final regular season meet in Petersburg on Oct. 18-19 before the regional championpships in Sitka on Nov. 1-2.

“I think the kids are excited,” Crowe said. “Their enthusiasm shows. Getting to the regional championship is in sight now, and every workout counts. I think we’ll see some hard swims in practice.

“We were good in (Juneau or in Sitka earlier this year),” he continued. “But not as good (as this weekend). This was awesome.”

Honoring the seniors

Before the Ketchikan Invitational kicked off on Saturday, Kayhi honored its nine seniors on the roster.

This weekend was the team’s only home meet this season.

Clocking the coaches

The coach’s team of Matt Hagan and Rocky Elerding, from Ketchikan, Ginger Evens, from Petersburg, and Kenny Fox, from Thunder Mountain, finished third in their 200-yard medley relay in 1:58.46.

New pool records

Both days of the Ketchikan Invitational saw a new pool record set.

On Saturday, Sitka’s Grace Harang finished the 500-yard freestyle in 5:23.32, eclipsing the previous record set in 2012 by Maddy Stephens. Stephens completed the race in 5:23.70.

Not even 24 hours earlier, on Friday, Sitka’s Tytan Frawley did the same thing in the men’s 500-yard freestyle.

Frawley finished the race in 4:56.01, beating the previous record set in 2012 by Vince Kowalski. Kowalski completed the 500-yard race in 4:57.72.
