Ketchikan XC wins Petersburg Invitational

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — There is something to be said for putting in the hard work for a sport over the offseason — especially an individual sport. Because putting their best foot forward lies solely on the individual.

There isn’t a team to back them up.

But when Gabe Tabb crossed the finish line at the Petersburg Invitational on Saturday, there wasn’t a happier group of people on the sideline moreso than his teammates.

Tabb shaved five minutes from his personal record, finishing Petersburg’s 5K course in 28:40.59.

“All last year, he was running in the 32 and 33 (minute mark),” Ketchikan head coach Leigh Woodward said. “He really put in some miles this offseason.”

Tabb’s performance was one of many personal bests Ketchikan set on Saturday. And the strong showing across the board gave Ketchikan a clean sweep in the boys’ and girls’ races.

The boys’ team won, tallying 51 points, and the girls’ squad scored 60.

“We had some great races,” Woodward said.

On the girls’ side, Anneliese Hiatt set a new PR, finishing in 21:10.13, and both Paige and Maggie Boehlert also hit personal bests.

Paige Boehlert completed the race in 23:19.08. Maggie Boehlert finished in 23:41.71.

Ketchikan’s Ada Odden tied her personal best, finishing in 22:24.88, and Morgan Elerding hit the 21-minute mark for the first time this season.

On the boys’ side, Mickey Lapinski was just five seconds off his personal best for the second time this year, placing fifth and finishing in 17:42.62.

Lapinski and Brent Capps flipped as Ketchikan’s top two runners from a week ago.

Capps, who finished seventh on Saturday, placed ahead of Lapinski on Aug. 31 in Juneau.
