Coming soon

The new school year is only two weeks off.

In preparation, the Ketchikan School District started new employee orientation last week. It will continue through next week.

New teachers and staff, paraprofessionals and substitutes will be presenting for orientation.

Fast Track will have an open house next Thursday.

Teachers’ and staff’s first day of school will be Monday, Aug. 26, although teachers and staff tend to begin preparing earlier than two days before school’s start.

Teachers’ first official work day for the school year is Wednesday, Aug. 28, when Ketchikan High School will have an open house and ice cream social. New Kayhi students will register and present for orientation next week.

Then the students show up on Thursday, Aug. 29.

At this point, for all intents and purposes, summer vacation is over and academics and activities are quick off the block — football, cross country, debate, and swim and dive — at Kayhi.

High school students also will join middle school and students from elementary schools in a variety of after-school activities provided by private business and nonprofit organizations — dance and sports to name two possibilities.

Indeed, the vacation is coming to a close as students and their families prepare for school.

It’s only 14 short days off.
