Post 3 in title game: Playing Eagle River in Matson Invitational

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — Ketchikan Post 3 will take on the Eagle River ALB Wolves at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning in the American Legion baseball Matson Invitational tournament championship game at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Ketchikan squad is undefeated in the double-elimination tournament that began Friday at Bartlett High School. Eagle River, playing through the loser’s bracket after a 7-3 loss to Service Post 28 on Saturday, secured two wins on Monday to reach the championship game by beating North Pole Post 30 by a score of 11-6, and avenging its earlier loss to Service by a 4-2 margin.

Ketchikan is coming into the championship game with a solid offense, having outscored its opponents 34-8 in the Matson Invitational thus far. Its pitching staff is fresh, too, having the benefit of a strong rotation and a day of rest on Monday.

Tuesday’s championship round will be the fifth time that Ketchikan and Eagle River have squared off during the 2019 American Legion season. Eagle River visited Ketchikan for a four-game series in late June. Ketchikan swept the series, outscoring the visitors by a total margin of 52-21.

Should Eagle River prevail in Tuesday morning’s contest, the teams would play again at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mulcahy Stadium.
