The Ketchikan American Legion Baseball team had mixed results in the first day of the Todd Ryan Memorial Tournament in Wasilla Friday. Ketchikan came back to beat Bartlett 6-3 in the first game and then got completely steamrolled by league-leading Wasilla 19-1 in the second.
Wasilla 19, Ketchikan 1
In order to beat the undefeated Road Warriors (13-0) Ketchikan knew it would have to be just about perfect. It wasn’t.
Ketchikan committed four errors in the first inning. That combined with a triple, three singles, two walks, a sacrifice fly, a fielder’s choice, and a couple of wild pitches put Ketchikan in an immediate 8-0 hole.
Wasilla added four more runs in the second without the benefit of a hit on four walks, two hit batters, a passed ball and another error.
Four walks, four singles and another error brought six more runs across the plate in the third inning for Wasilla.
Ketchikan scored in the top of the fourth when Wyatt Barajas hit a single, Korbin Stack reached on an error and Vinny Trujillo reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Barajas to score.
In the bottom of the fourth, it appeared that Ketchikan had brought Wasilla’s onslaught to a halt getting two quick outs, but then a single and a double brought in another run.
In the top of the fifth, Ketchikan loaded the bases with a single by CJ Jasper and walks to Barajas and Liam Kiffer, but they were left there when the game ended with Wasilla ahead by more than 10 runs.
Barajas, CJ Jasper and Kiffer all had singles for Ketchikan.
McKinley Hamilton and Jasper pitched for Ketchikan.
Ketchikan 6, Bartlett 3
Ketchikan jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jasper singled and scored on a single by Terik Brown. A walk, a single, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly allowed Bartlett to tie the score.
Ketchikan edged back in front in the third when Brown walked and scored on a single by Azariah Schultz. Then Bartlett jumped in front 3-2, following an error, a sacrifice fly, a double and a single.
Ketchikan took the lead back in the fifth when Brown walked, Trujillo singled and Barajas singled to score Brown and Trujillo. Ketchikan added two more runs in the seventh inning when Stack singled and scored on a single by Dylan Nedzwecky. Nedzwecky then scored on a single by Kiffer.
Trujillo led Ketchikan with two hits and Jasper, Brown, Stack, Barajas, Nedzwecky, Kiffer, Schultz, Tyler Slick and McKinley Hamilton each had one.
Nedzwecky and Gabe Bowlen took the mound for Ketchikan.
On Saturday at 2 p.m., Ketchikan will play against a visiting legion team from Napoleon Ohio.
