KETCHIKAN (KDN) — Slowly but surely, the Metlakatla High School Chiefs chipped away at the Nikiski High School Bulldogs’ lead. After the Bulldogs carried a 16-11 lead into the second quarter of the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic seventh-place game, Metlakatla’s CJ Hudson found his groove and helped the Chiefs tie the game at 24 apiece before the half. They would eventually win 53-50. Hudson scored seven of the Chiefs’ 13 points in the frame. DJ King and Elijah Caspersen also nailed down 3-pointers.

And in the second half, Metlakatla inched ahead. Despite Nikiski’s Jace Kornstad hitting a pair of threes in the third quarter, Metlakatla’s King, Caspersen and Aidan Rolando gave the Chiefs a one-point lead, 35-34, heading into the final frame.

Metlakatla outscored the Bulldogs 18-16 in the fourth quarter, with the help of Hudson and Rolando combining to nail down six of eight free throws in the frame.
