KETCHIKAN (KDN) — It was a tale of two halves for the Lathrop High School Lady Malemutes. And the Soldotna High School Lady Stars took advantage of their opportunity in the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic championship on Saturday evening.
As Lathrop entered the half, ahead 28-23, momentum was on their side. Freshman forward Torrin Johnson Oates had just hit 10 points in the half. Junior guard Ella Roberts had drained three threes in the first two quarters, and Olivia Kraska and Aniya Tuck had posted a couple shots from underneath.
But once the second half began, the Lady Malemutes offense came to a screeching halt. They scored just six points in the third quarter, and zero in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Soldotna’s offense remained steady, splitting 20 points evenly between the final two frames. And the Lady Stars turned a five-point deficit into a 43-34 championship win.
Soldotna’s Danica Schmidt got the hot-hand in the second half, lighting up the scoreboard for 11 points, including a pair of threes.
And although the Lady Stars’ Brittani Blossom, who did most of her damage in the second quarter, only hit one free throw in the second half. She still finished the day with 14 points.
Scoring Line: Lathrop — Ella Roberts, 17; Torrin Johnson Oates, 11; Lianna Tuck, 2; Aniya Tuck, 2; Olivia Kraska, 2. Soldotna — Brittani Blossom, 14; Danica Schmidt, 11; Ituau Tuisaula, 10; Aliann Schmidt, 6; Drysta Crosby-Schneider, 2.
