Kings stay a step ahead, finish 1st, 2nd

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — The Ketchikan High School stayed a step ahead of the rest of the pack during the Petersburg Invitational Meet on Friday. The Lady Kings won the gold, scoring a total of 51 points. The boys’ squad brought home silver, tallying 49 points.

Nearly 15 schools participated in the meet, with 13 teams in the girls’ meet and 14 teams in the boys’. Kayhi was the only school to have both squads place in the top three, respectively.

It was the second straight meet in which freshman Micky Lapinski brought home the top spot for the Kayhi Kings. His time of 18:02.99 is a personal record, shaving nearly 16 seconds off his previous time at Metlakatla over Labor Day Weekend. Brent Capps wasn’t too far behind, as the duo place eighth and ninth overall. Capps also set a personal best, finishing in 18:20.89.

Sophomore Charlie Blair narrowly missed a new personal record — just three tenths of a second away. Blair, along with the King boys — Jacob and Dwight — finished 12th, 13th and 14th, respectively. Dwight King also set a new personal record, finishing in 18:41.80.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Morgan Elerding had her best finish this season, placing fourth overall and finishing in 21:14.29. Ruby McCue, who set a personal best, and Ashley Cyr also finished in the top 10. McCue finished in 22:07.41 and Cyr crossed the finish line in 22:24.29.

Paige Boehlert finished 12th and set a personal record of 22:34.54. Maggie Boehlert and Rachel Knight also finished in the top 25.
