Ashton John Frank Hayward

Ashton John Frank Hayward, 28, died Feb. 21, 2018, in Metlakatla.

He was born Sept. 27, 1989, at Mt. Edgecumbe.

Mr. Hayward grew up in Metlakatla, graduating from Metlakatla High School in 2008. He continued his education at Clarke Community College in Vancouver, Washington.

He worked as a commercial fisherman and diver, owning and operating the fishing vessel Dream Girl.

Mr. Hayward enjoyed spending time with his son, playing basketball, representing his community, working on his boat and working on projects in the shop with his father.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, John and Dorothy Marsden, and Frank and Alma Hayward; grandfather, Robert Gray; great-uncles, John and Daniel Marsden; and step-brother, Chaz Nelson II.

He is survived by his son, Harbor of Bremerton, Washington; mother, Amy Gray of Metlakatla; father, Monte (Sally) Hayward of Metlakatla; sisters, Ashley Martinez of Washington, Aleasha Hayward of Metlakatla, and Monica Hayward of Washington; step-siblings Echo, Liliana and Caleb; nephews, Sebastian, Greyson, Haiden, Roman and Obert; nieces, Baileigh, Liv and Noralee; “and many more loving aunts, uncles and cousins,” his family writes.

A service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, with a funeral service at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018. Both will take place at the Metlakatla Presbyterian Church. The services will be officiated by the Rev. Larry Emery.

Mr. Hayward’s remains will be interred at Ocean View Cemetery in Metlakatla.
