KETCHIKAN (KDN) — The Metlakatla High School Miss Chiefs basketball team was defeated by the West Valley High School Lady Wolf Pack 60-47 on Saturday Night at the Clarke Cochrane Gym.

A third-place overall finish in the girls’ bracket of competition was on the line as Metlakatla battled its way through a highly contested first half of play, only to struggle down the stretch as the Miss Chiefs were saddled with fifth place in the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic.

The Miss Chiefs received a majority of their production on offense via Drena Hayward and her team-leading 22 points. Hayward went to the free-throw line consistently during the defeat and went 11-for-16 from the charity stripe.

Alexis Russell of Metlakatla also turned in a double-digit performance, scoring 10 points and sinking a 3-pointer down the stretch.
