KETCHIKAN (KDN) — Friday is the national Veterans Day holiday, which will affect most government and financial services in the Ketchikan area.
Since 1954, the United States has commemorated Veterans Day on Nov. 11 to recognize and honor the nation’s veterans and military families. Previous to that year, Nov. 11 was observed as Armistice Day.
Locally, the Joseph T. Craig Post 3 of the American Legion will have a Veterans Day pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday. At 11 a.m., Friday, weather permitting, there will be a march from the American Legion post to Centennial Square in front of the Tongass Historical Museum, where Veterans Day will be formally commemorated. The American Legion then will have an open house until 1 p.m.
Federal and State of Alaska (including the Alaska Court System) offices will be closed on Friday. The Southeast Alaska Discovery Center will be closed.
Ketchikan Gateway Borough offices and the Gateway Recreation Center and Gateway Aquatic Center will be closed. Borough Transit buses will operate on their normal schedule.
City of Ketchikan and Ketchikan Public Utilities will be closed Friday, as will the city's Solid Waste Facility. Pacific Waste (Tongass Sanitation) will be operating on its regular schedule.
Ketchikan School District offices and schools will be open Friday. The University of Southeast Ketchikan campus will be closed.
City of Saxman offices will be closed.
Ketchikan Indian Community administrative offices and Tribal Health Clinic are closed Friday.
Northrim Bank, First Bank, Key Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Tongass Federal Credit Union, Credit Union 1 will be closed on Friday. Alaska USA Federal Credit Union will be open regular hours.
The Ketchikan Daily News will not publish Saturday, Nov. 11. Publication of the Ketchikan Daily News will resume Monday, Nov. 13.
