James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
In this verse James makes it pretty clear that trials will come, and boy do they. Each day in life we are thrown curve balls, circumstances that create anger, hurt, mistrust and fear. For Christians these circumstances provide opportunities for the Lord to meet our needs and show himself faithful and trustworthy.
When you are hit by a life-shaking curve ball you have to decide whether you can weather the situation or let it get the best of you by separating you from the only one who can guide you through and provide what you need to persevere.
The Bible has many verses that support the belief that God is committed to assisting you to persevere;
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him and he keeps me. My heart leaps for joy and with my song I praise him.” Psalm 28:7
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phillippians 4:13
“Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you.” Psalm 55:22
I am currently dealing with a curve ball in my life and I have chosen to invite God to help me, because I really need help right now. Each day I pray for his strength and grace to put aside what I cannot change or control. Perseverance is a full-time job, it is not easy to do, especially when the situation is unresolved, but I know he is watching over me because I have a peace and sense of determination to do the right thing that can only come from his spirit welling up in me.
When the trials come your way, give the Lord a chance to be your strength. He so desires for us to call on him whether we are in crisis or not, but we tend to yell louder for help when the situation we are in is dire.
Perseverance is very seldom built up when the situation is easily solved, it comes through when we are pushing forward through our feelings and choosing to not lash out or withdraw. Perseverance can bring us to a place where we are able to deal with the answers whatever they may be or however our curve ball situation pans out, we will know that our God is an awesome God and he has brought us through with grace and mercy because he loves us so!
