Stedman named as committee chair

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — Sen. Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, has been appointed as chairman of the Legislative Budget and Audit Committee.

Stedman’s appointment was announced Monday by Senate President Pete Kelly, R-Fairbanks.

Kelly also announced that Sen. Cathy Giessel, R-Anchorage, has been appointed as a member of Legislative Council.

“I am confident Sen. Stedman and Sen. Giessel will continue to serve the people of Alaska with integrity in their new roles,” Kelly said in a prepared statement.

According to Senate majority caucus information, the appointments fill vacancies left by Sen. Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak, who stepped down after filing to run for lieutenant governor. Legislators are prohibited from serving on either committee if they file to run for an elective office outside the state House or Senate.
