On Don Young

EDITOR, Daily News:

Congratulations to Congressman Don Young’s on his election to a 21st term in Congress. I sincerely wish him well in representing the people of Alaska.

He might be interested in the coverage of his election by The Associated Press in the Nov. 7 Ketchikan Daily News. In that article, he is quoted as saying that Obama "has to make the first step forward" or the House, with Young as its senior member, will act as a "checkmate" for the duration. That suggests an unwillingness to reach at least halfway across the aisle. His words sound like those of a petulant child demanding that someone else act first or he won’t cooperate.

Congressman Young is better than that! He has the wisdom and experience to be a powerful voice of reason during this next Congress. He is needed more than ever, but maybe not for the reasons he stated. He is needed to act for all the citizens of our state, not just for the Republicans who voted for him.

Congressman Young does not represent Republicans. He represents all Alaskans, whether they voted for him or not. Please live up to your slogan, "Congressman for all Alaska." Please reach across the aisle in a spirit of cooperation. Give us all a reason to be proud.
