EDITOR, Daily News:
This letter concerns the application before the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Planning Commission to have portions of land adjacent to Copper Ridge Lane rezoned from Low Density Residential to Heavy Industrial/Special Limitations.
The applicant wishes to use the rezoned parcel as a site for a recycling operation, involving crushing and screening concrete and asphalt materials. Use of the property in this manner would involve heavy truck traffic along the newly constructed Copper Ridge Lane at a minimum and undetermined noise and dust issues.
Numerous residents and adjacent property owners have gone on record in opposition to this rezoning request. I wish to join them in their opposition. It makes little sense, having just completed a beautiful new public library as well as the new improvements to Copper Ridge Lane, to put them both at risk by rezoning nearby land to Heavy Industrial and creating potential usage, which is profoundly incompatible with the surrounding property.
I note that the planning staff report for this rezone application recommends denial. I applaud the planning staff’s findings and recommendation and trust that the commission will act in the best interest of the community and deny this application.
