May is an extraordinary month in Ketchikan. We transform overnight from a quiet town in April to become host to thousands of visitors each day by mid-May. Local waters see commercial troll fishermen take advantage of spring fishery opportunities while the commercial net fleets begin preparing for their season. Sport anglers are readying their gear for the May 28 start of the Ketchikan CHARR Educational Fund King Salmon Derby.

Yay for us

It’s our birthday: The Ketchikan Gateway Borough turns 50 this year.

And there’s a party! The celebration will be at the White Cliff building from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 13, where there will be music by a live band, barbecue, refreshments and — get this — borough history and trivia. (There, now; we’ve given you one trivia answer: The borough was incorporated on Sept. 13, 1963. Beyond that, you are going to have to read up on these things.)

Among the other celebratory notes for the upcoming do are free bus rides all day and free swimming at the Gateway Aquatic Center.

The borough’s theme for its 50th anniversary is “Proud history, bright future.”

We like it.

Any reason for a party, and turning 50 is a pretty good reason. We’re in. See you at White Cliff on Friday the 13th. Ride The Bus!
