KETCHIKAN (KDN) — For the second straight day, everyone on the Ketchikan High School Lady Kings’ roster played — and for the second straight day, the Lady Kings won.
Kayhi beat Valdez High School 50-40 in the final game of the Mt. McKinley Bank Holiday Classic on Saturday. The two teams met at Monroe Catholic High School, as part of the round-robin tournament.
The Lady Kings finish the holiday classic with back-to-back victories. After falling to Monroe Catholic on Thursday, 44-39, Ketchikan beat Grace Christian High School 43-22 on Friday.
The Lady Kings improve to 6-2 this season, and will host Mt. Edgecumbe High School on Jan. 10-11 at Clarke Cochrane Gymnasium.
Pihl leads Kings past Valdez
Kristian Pihl scored 28 points on Saturday — 24 of them came from behind the 3-point line.
Pihl was on point behind the arc, as he led the Kings to a 63-54 victory over Valdez. He hit seven of his eight 3-pointers in the first half.
The Kings hit 14 threes in the game. Ketchikan had allowed 14 3-pointers just 36 hours earlier, when the Kings squared off against Monroe Catholic on Thursday. Ketchikan lost that game 84-78.
Defensively, the Kings’ James Nordlund held Valdez’s All-State player Jalen Freeman to just 12 points — two of which came from the free throw line.
Freeman had scored 25 points against Monroe Catholic on Friday.
The Kings finish the Mt. McKinley Bank Holiday Classic 1-2. But after Saturday’s win, the Kings improve to 4-2 this season. They’ll host Colony High School on Jan. 10-11 at Clarke Cochrane Gymnasium.
Notes: Ketchikan’s Kristian Pihl, Chris Lee, Jenae Rhoads and Nadire Zhuta were named to the All-Tournament teams at the Mt. McKinley Bank Holiday Classic.
