KETCHIKAN (KDN) — The Ketchikan High School girls basketball team snuck past West Valley High School in a 53-52 victory on Saturday afternoon at Dimond High School.
Kayhi’s win brings its foray into this year’s Dimond Lady Lynx Prep Shootout to a close with a 2-2 record.
The Lady Kings earned a seventh-place overall finish in the tournament in the process.
From the onset, the game saw both teams trade baskets, with neither team able to grab a commanding lead throughout the 32 minutes played.
Ultimately, it came down to a 9-7 Lady Kings scoring advantage in the final eight of these minutes that proved essential for Kayhi.
In the victory, the Lady Kings shot 60 percent from the free-throw line, sinking six of their 10 foul shots.
Senior Brittany Slick scored 19 points to lead the team in scoring, while Slick’s teammates, juniors Emmie Smith and Ashley Huffine, also put up double-digit points.
Nine of Slick’s points came in the first quarter of play.
Smith put up an even six points in each half, and Huffine made a pair of 3-pointers in the second half, while shooting 43 percent from the field in the winning effort for Kayhi.
Four different Lady Kings scored in the fourth quarter.
Kayhi will next play on Feb. 15-16 in Juneau against the Juneau-Douglas Lady Crimson Bears.
It will be the third meeting between the rivals this season.
The Lady Kings took down the Lady Crimson Bears in two games played in Ketchikan on Jan. 12-13, outscoring JDHS by a combined margin of 121-93 along the way.
