Body ID’d as missing hiker: Discovered by duck hunter outside of Juneau

JUNEAU (AP) — The body discovered by a duck hunter last week outside Juneau was identified as a hiker who went missing in late June, Alaska authorities said.

The Alaska Medical Examiner’s Office identified the human remains as 53-year-old Teri Heuscher, a Juneau resident whose body was found at a makeshift campsite at the base of Thunder Mountain, the Juneau Empire reported. The body was near the trail, about 40 minutes from the trailhead where her vehicle was parked.

The remains had deteriorated considerably, making identification difficult, Juneau Police Department Lt. David Campbell said. The examiners matched Heuscher’s dental records to confirm her identity.

Authorities have not determined a cause of death, but they said it does not appear to be suspicious.

“There wasn’t anything obvious in the remains that would indicate any trauma. So at this point we don’t suspect any foul play,” Campbell said.

The investigation into her death remains ongoing, police said.

Police are withholding the exact location of where the body was found in order to preserve the integrity of the scene, Campbell said.

After Heuscher was reported missing, authorities began a search that was called off days later.
