Hikers have been all over the news this weekend for all the wrong reasons. In the Sierra Nevada wilderness, a woman was stranded for nine days after breaking her leg. She spent two of those days slowly crawling toward a creek for water. In Alaska, a stranded hiker was rescued on Friday by Juneau Mountain Rescue and Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search.

GIMME SHELTER — A trio of kittens sit on Monday in the office of Eddie Blackwood, director of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Animal Protection Department. The kittens are a small part of the more than 40 cats turned into the shelter in two days in late August. The kittens must finish their flea treatments, Blackwood said, before they can be adopted.
