ICE WATER, GOOD CAUSE — Buckets of icy water pour over the heads of enthusiastic participants in a mass ALS Ice Bucket Challenge early Tuesday evening in the Taquan Air parking lot. After recovering from the cold shower shock, many in the group wished a happy birthday to Sandy Wendte, who was seated nearby. Tuesday's event, which ultimately drew an estimated 100 people, was organized by Tonja Borer to coincide with the birthday of Wendte, who's fighting ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Brien Salazar of Taquan Air donated the space; Cedars Lodge donated a tote of ice; and youths and adults alike got soaked throughout the event, which, by early evening, had raised at least $1,775 for ALS research — with more yet to be counted, according to Borer. "It was a great turnout," she said. Staff photo by Scott Bowlen
